My wife and I made the two hour trip to Grand Rapids to watch our granddaughter play in a basketball game. The game finished around 2:30 PM, which left us a bit hungry. So my son, who lives in Ada, asked if we'd like to stop at the local deli, which we thought would work fine. The parking and the outside of the deli was decent, and the smell of smoked roast beef was in the air, making me even more hungry. We are in our mid 60's, and were disappointed that we needed to walk up a flight of stairs to get to the restaurant, but found on the way out, that there is an elevator that we could have used, (we will be back for sure). The staff didn't do seating or waiting on the tables until, (I think), 3 PM, so we were advised to order our own food and just find a table, (which was no problem). I ordered the, "Big John", which was roast beef on a nice bun, and a bottle of water. That was all that I needed, and the beef had a special flavor. The whole sandwich was outstanding, and I would likely order the same thing next time. Everyone else said that theirs was also outstanding; we all had a good time, the noise level was fine, and the atmosphere over by the fireplace was very down-home. The five of us had a very good lunch, and the total cost was only about $40, ($8 apiece). I will be going back here again.

Is this where the term "Bland Rapids" was invented? I had the rancher sandwich and cheddar potato soup. My sandwich had horseradish on it but the bite was more minnow than shark. The roast beef was tasteless and included gristle I didn't order. The soup had a little more going for it but seemed to have a lot of chicken base in it. The service was excellent and the vibe was comfortable. It was busy so obvs many like it--but it's not for me.

On a day trip to Grand Rapids with the Wife, wanted something different for lunch that we can't get at home. Our requirements were a big delicious deli sandwich. Shnitz Deli nocked it out of the park. her ruben was a meal with great meat and bread. I had some monster of a thing with both corned beef and pastrami, which I couldn't finish. I hated to leave it, but started having meat-sweats! Love this PlaceWe'll be back

5 stars for the carrot cake!! Best I have ever tasted! 4 stars for the sandwiches...really great and a very big size for a half. I would give it a five if I could have fries. My husband got the philly cheese steak which he loved. I highly recommend the Ruben. I got the schintz style one. I've had the California before and that is great as well. Great place to grab lunch with friends. Also seems like there are a lot of repeat customers which means its a great place.

I knew this place was going to be good when every suit and tie in Grand Rapids was standing in line (a long one at that) to grab a bite to eat here over the lunch hour. They building and inside table space is actually larger than expected and provided adequate seating for the large crowd. The order taking process and efficiency of the staff is exceptional. It was a well oiled machine and the staff know what they are doing. It didn't take long to get our order at all (even with the big crowd). Hi tried the Schnitz Reuben. Half size is more than enough. I can't imagine trying to take down a full size. I also had a side of potato salad - which was mouth watering and very good; heavy - but good. It is a sure bet that I will be back and try additional items along the way. This is the type of place you would go through the entire list of sandwich's and simply want to try most (if not all). The atmosphere was upbeat and fun. The staff were very pleasant and excellent in all areas. They noticed my work badge on and used my first name to speak to me. Just a nice touch and customer service touch. They deli window was eye popping with the basic salads, meat products, etc. - but also the deserts. Those alone were tempting. I could have spent more time here and certainly paid the price in lbs. on my waist. This is a must stop.

The Schnitz is perfect for a casual lunch of delicious sandwiches or a nice dinner with all sorts of variety! During the day the deli serves the best sandwiches and at night it turns into a sit-down restaurant with white table cloths and a huge variety of good-all delicious! The chef is the old chef of Tuscan Express and some of the pasta options are similar to those. You can also get the sandwiches at night! It's a great place for the whole family and it pretty hopping on Saturday nights.

Such a great place! The portions are large, even if you order a half sandwich which is still two whole slices of bread, just with half the filling. The meat is fresh and delicious and sliced to order. The breads are homemade and wonderful and even the side items are great! If you go at lunchtime there will likely be a long line of customers, but orders are taken and food is made super efficiently. Lots of tables to sit at or get a sandwich to go. Hands down, this is the best place for a delicious, no frills, filling deli sandwich.

One of the best local sammy joint! They have many different sandwiches to choose from. Everything is excellent and I just can't say anything bad. oh, wait.. I can - i wish not so many people knew about them. Lunch time is crazy busy, especially when school is in session. The high school kids, teachers, and administrators are there during lunch as are all the business people of the area. Some businesses even fax in their orders. So I have to remind myself that its never a quick stop at Schnitz. It is always worth it but I sometimes do not have the time to wait for the worlds best sandwich. Soups are amazing too! Oh and their red skin potato salad is yummy!

Great deli! Went here with mom today at prime lunch time and they were busy, but we still had our order taken quickly and our food brought out to us quickly. The service was great too, with the woman at the cash register taking orders being very nice and also very funny and the guy who brought out our sandwiches was very nice too. I had the create your own sandwich and I was surprised how many different offerings they had for meat, cheese, and other toppings on the menu for this. I decided to just get turkey on the Jewish rye and it was delicious! The turkey was flavorful and moist and the bread had good rye flavor and a good amount of chewiness to it. My mom got the Brooklyn Reuben and she said it was VERY good and would definitely get it again. She also got a side of the potato salad and she said it was some of the best she has had. I really wish i had tried some of the cake or brownies in their refrigerated case, they looked delicious! We will most definitely be going back!

Oh, Schnitz Deli, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... except there are far too many to fit in one review. As a former local, this is always on my itinerary when I return to GR. I love love love this deli and would eat here every day to keep it in business if I had to- fortunately, their extensive customer base does that so I don't have to. All right, so enough gushing over this amazing place. The main points: Location: Close to downtown without the chaotic traffic of downtown. Located near Fulton and Fuller, there is a parking lot behind the building and a decent amount of street parking nearby. Space: Schnitz has renovated a lot in the past few years, especially after acquiring the space that used to previously connect it to Common Ground Coffee. It looks so much fresher, newer, and brighter now than ever. Love it. Lots of tables in a variety of sizes, with the center focus being on the deli counter itself. As it should be. Staff: Awesome. They totally remember names and make orders as fast as possible. Crowd factor: This place definitely gets its rushes, but they keep the flow moving. Order at the counter and grab a table; they'll bring it out to you. Drinks: Coke products, water, tea, coffee. Connected to a coffee shop, so you can get a variety of fancy drinks. Food: Omg. I get sentimental just thinking about it. Quite simply, I love it. Such a great menu, but you can build your own sandwiches too. Half sandwiches are whole; they just have half the meat but are still very filling. The salads are great (love the broccoli salad), and the desserts are phenomenal (banana bars = yum). Final tip: Try the #4 California Reuben. Easily my favorite thing on the whole menu.

I seriously paused between eating my broccoli salad and eating my sandwich to write this review - that's how good this broccoli salad was. I'm not kidding. It's incredible. I may stop by to pick up a big container to take home to Chicago... I travel to Grand Rapids a couple times a year and my colleagues always order sandwiches from Schnitz. This is a top notch deli, in my opinion. They don't skimp on fillings and the food is quality. I have never actually been to the deli - I may have to change that!

Best sandwiches in Grand Rapids!!! Makes Subway, Jimmy Johns & Quizno's taste like garbage! My favorite is their Ruben but it's all good. Lunchtime is busy but worth the wait or you can fax in your order. My mouth is watering just writing this review :)

I really love the #1 Corned Beef Special. Very good deli sandwiches in big portions. The place can get very busy around lunch time and is only open til mid-afternoon. I have heard great things about their breakfast but have not tried it myself. You won't be disappointed

Believe what you read here. This is a very good sandy shop with good sides and zero attitude on the part of the help. They are glad you're there and happy to help no matter how busy they are. Have had half a dozen sandys here and they were all good and plenty. A worthy place to spend your money. Reasonably priced.

Oh My, why did I not know about this place sooner? I got the Evan's Double DIp and a slice of German Chocolate cake brought to me for lunch the other day and I would have gone back that night for dinner too if I could have. The sandwich was bigger than my head, loaded with heavenly pastrami, kraut, and slaw on soft rye. The cake was almost as big and just as delicious. Soft fluffy cake and creamy caramel like frosting loaded with coconut and pecans. My husband and kids got something or other too, but I was too busy stuffing my face to pay attention to theirs. I heard no complaints though, just everyone chomping down and a few animal like noises here and there. Hungry yet? I know I am. The only down side at all is that they close at 2pm and I'm writing this too late in the day to go get a sandwich.

Here I am, six weeks later, giving this wonderful establishment another five star review. Why? Because this place continuously blows me away. I've visited when I'm the only person in the shop, and I've visited and stood in line for twenty minutes to even order, and I've received the most amazing service each and every time I visit, regardless of what else is going on in the store. The Schnitz Club and Philly are extremely good, but I've fallen even more in love with this place after trying the ham it up sandwich - ham, swiss, l&t, and fantastic honeycup mustard on sourdough (try it grilled - totally worth the extra quarter!) - and I've realized that the true love of my life, in sandwich form is the Chicago Rueben. This beauty is a mile high pile of turkey and ham, swiss, coleslaw, and 1000 Island dressing. The standard sandwich comes on rye, but I always end up getting it on grilled sourdough and it's absolutely to die for. Their broccoli salad is also fantastic, nice and crisp, with a wonderful bit of sweetness, thanks to the raisins. One last thing - The staff. The woman who runs the register, I believe her name is Tammy, is perhaps one of the most amazing people in this city. This woman will make you feel special, almost like you own the place. She's so kind, and let me tell you, I'm a sucker for people who remember my name, and she always gets it right on the mark. Though my lease isn't up until June, I'm already planning to renew, just so I can stay so close to this wonderful place that has impeccable food and service.

Yum!! We won a gift card here (thanks Yelp!), so we stopped by to try some sandwiches around 2:30pm on a Wednesday. There was no wait, but realizing that they close at 3pm, we got our sandwiches to go. I ordered the #18 black russian: corned beef on pumpernickel with grilled onions, swiss cheese, and 1000 island dressing. Omg, my sandwich was not only amazing, it had lots of meat on it! At $8.75 for a whole sandwich, I was worried about the portion size, but was not disappointed. The meat was flavorfull, and the grilled onions added a contrasting sweetness to the sandwich. My husband ordered the #3 Brooklyn Reuben: pastrami on pumpernickel with swiss, 1000 island, and sauerkraut....also delish!! He especially liked the sandwich because it wasn't dry! Everyone there was very friendly. They greeted us when we walked in and thanked us for coming when we left. I will definitely go back to try out a different sandwich and maybe some soup or a side item. The restaurant has lots of seating and is connected to Common Grounds, the coffee shop next door.

What a great deli! I have eaten here numerous times and always leave happy. I keep forgetting to get a photo of my sandwich, mainly because I usually attack and disappear it before I can think of anything else. The sandwiches are big, fresh and tasty. They have a large selection and you can feel free to modify them as you prefer. The toppings are great and the meat is both flavorful and plentiful - no skimping here. I sometimes get two sandwiches (one for me, one for my tapeworm), but I can usually be satisfied with one - which is saying something. The desserts are pretty good as well and I haven't gone wrong with one yet. Service is always friendly and prompt. Really, not much to dislike about this place except for the lack of parking, but with the overall quality, I don't mind much.

Now I'm not saying I'd brave a blizzard just to eat your sandwiches and baked goods, Schnitz, but I'm heavily implying I'd brave a blizzard to do just that. If I'm ever privileged to live in a time where the human race lives under constant threat from shark - infested tornados, I'd be more than happy to venture out into a desolate hell scape in order to feast on your delectable fudge brownie and Chicago Ruben. The atmosphere of this restaurant is fantastic, the service is beyond friendly, and it serves as a way to take your mind off the painful reality of daily life. Plus, they serve Vernors. To me, that soda will be the reason this world will be freed from our future vicious alien overlords.

Let me preface this by saying I'm a deli snob; I've had the best MI (Mudgies in Detroit, Star Deli in Southfield) has to offer as well as nationally renowned establishments (Katz's deli NYC, etc). Schnitz is BY FAR my favorite deli. If this was near my office on the east side of the state I'd probably eat here 3-4x a week (hint hint, Schnitz management). Although I've tried all their sandwiches in the brief 3 month stint I was working in GR, my favorite has bot to be the club with spicy mustard and ham added (only comes with turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo by default). The bread may be the best part, baked fresh daily next door and grilled to a golden crisp. The mushroom soup is also pretty bomb. Actually, all the soups are great! Prices are also reasonable at about $8 for a sandwich. Note: Closes early (2 or 3 pm).
(5)
Alley P.
Hands down the best deli in GR! Servings are large, even for the "half" sandwiches, so come hungry! Busy at lunchtime but the line moves quickly. I am a huge fan of the California Reuben but the Rancher's Roast Beef has also climbed to the top of the list. I have never been disappointed here.

A coworker has been trying to talk me in to going here for a while. I was always a little scared because I thought it was somehow related to the Schnitzelbank (sp?) that closed down a while ago. I won't go in to that place. But the Schnitz is GREAT. I had a great sammy. I'm going to go back often and try all of them. I had the Corned Beef...man that was good. YUM!

Sandwiches are fantastic. LInes at lunch-time can be long, but for me that is a tell-tale sign of a great place. I try to support local, non-chain businesses, and this is a great, local Grand Rapids eatery.

Ok, this place only gets better with time. It is by far the best deli in Grand Rapids. Why? The food is great but the staff is absolutely superb. Thousands of people come through here but they greet customers by name. Schnitz is THE deli to go to in GR.

Great spot for a sandwich at lunch time. You can build your own sandwich or order from a variety of specials. Bread is delicious and fresh, they bake it next door. Meat is of a good quality and portions are generous. Most sandwiches can be order in either half or whole, half sandwiches are still a whole sandwich but half the meat. The atmosphere is busy, which I always think makes me feel like I am getting something special (and in fact I am). They are only open until 3pm, but do you really want sandwiches later than that anyhow. personally this is my favorite lunch spot in town I would recommend it to anyone. P.S. try the #9 if you like ham sandwiches.

This is a great local deli. The sandwiches are hearty and fresh and the staff is friendly and quick. Very popular-there's often a line at lunch but it moves quickly. A caution to those of you trying to reduce your carbon footprint -all takeout is served in styrofoam. Forgive them that and you've found a winner for lunch.
(4)
Simon P.
Pretty standard deli sandwich fare, but prepared well, large, and at the right price. I just wish they were open later! As it is, we only hit it up for lunch every other week or so. But when we do, we leave happy and full. The breakfast sandwiches are also great.

Lucky me... Many of the places I've been introduced to in Grand Rapids have been really good and this place was my most favorite. I sampled the fudge brownies and it just melted in my mouth, which was just the beginning to a delicious lunch. Of course, the servings were HUGE and we had to push two tables together to fit our group of 7, but it was still very comfy. The freshly baked bread from their bakery just around the corner made these sandwiches stand out from all the rest. I don't know what everyone else got, but I got the "Black Russian" and it still makes my mouth water when I think about it.

For my first trip to the Snitz Deli, I ordered #9, The Hair of the (Mrs) Dog. Going from memory, I think it had turkey breast, honey mustard, lettuce, tomato, and dill havarti cheese on sourdough bread. I couldn't taste the cheese at all and would skip it next time. They were really busy and, in spite of ordering half a sandwich, got a whole. Oh well -- I was pretty hungry and ate all of it, even though it was quite large. I would visit again to give it another try.

Sandwiches only, but some of the best in town. Make sure you get there for breakfast as well, delicious breakfast sandwiches for the right price. Every sandwich comes with a fresh latke; I'm not a big fan of them myself, but my girlfriend loves them.

I really love their sandwiches. They now have breakfast, which is just as good. I'm a fan of the Alpine Veggie, though almost everything I've had there is good. I wish they were open more hours (they're only 11-3 M-F and Sat til 2 or 3. I think)

Great deli. No more need be said.

Affordable, big portions, delicious, friendly, and fast. This place was a winner, and we'll be back again and again and again! P.S. Try the banana cake!

Great place to pick up an amazing sandwich in a clean and comfortable environment. Employees are the best...especially Mary who always greets me with a big smile. When I am picking up lunch for my wife and cant remember the ingredients of her favorite sandwich Mary knows exactly what she likes. Love this place!

(4)Tim L.

I think)
